My Take
I created this animated short as a tribute to one of the world's most iconic and influential musicians. I chose the look and feel based on the audio and the spirit of Nina herself.
Nina Simone lived an intense and often turbulent life. Her struggle with adversity and mental health permeates her music. I aimed to capture the true grit and commitment to authenticity that she embodied. To achieve this, I employed a combination of different animation techniques. I utilized photographs to create a collage-like effect, employed 3D rendering for the revolving doors, and rotoscope animation of Nina during the interview itself. The bold graphics and conceptual transitions take the viewer on a journey, allowing them to truly feel the strength and resilience that Nina possessed.
The animated short evokes feelings of passion, perseverance, and a longing for human connection.
